Most distilled spirits produced in India that are labelled ‘whisky’ do not actually qualify as whisky according to EU legislation. This is because they tend to be a blend of neutral spirit made from fermented molasses and therefore more like a rum than whisky. There is no compulsory definition for a whisky in India which is why producers opt for this cheaper production method. However, there are brands that make whisky entirely from malt and other grains. Amrut Distilleries is credited with being the pioneer of whisky production in India, launching the first single malt Indian whisky in 2004. This was closely followed by John Distilleries with its now world-famous Paul John brand. Paul John officially released its first single malt in 2012. Thanks to the tropical climate in India, it takes just one year for whisky to reach the same levels of maturity as a three-year-old Scotch.
