Its been the toast of drinkers across countries & continents. But is Gin slowing down and how will it fair in 2022. We share our views on Gin through the Spirits & the Shaker !
Drinking on the go with RTDs: Ready To Drink or RTDs became famously popular in 2020 and 2021. It has shown us a new way to enjoy drinking whether it be out of a can, bottle or even a pouch. This trend is set to continue in 2022 with gin taking the lead in this category, whether it be in busy bars or picking them up from the grocery store, we will see a lot more gin RTDs in 2022.
Craft gin to cool down: Studies have shown a drastic decrease in certain countries for the craze of craft gins, in the UK alone internet searches related to key words like ‘gin’, ‘craft gin’, etc. have gone down 14% while searches for other clear spirits have risen. Craft gin will take a backseat for a few years due the growing trend of experiencing big natural and bold flavours rather than softer hints and notes of exotic ingredients. While gin still continues its upward trend in countries like India, South Africa, China, etc. we might see an overall drop in sales and interest in the spirit.
Gin rises in the east: Gin lovers are well aware of the famous dry gins from the west but it is now time for the distilleries of the east to showcase their technique and products. For a couple of years distilleries in the east have been making great headway when it comes to gin, countries like India, China and Japan have had huge success when it comes to gins and we see this trend continuing. These countries have a fresher outlook on gin and are not afraid to experiment with flavour profiles, base ingredients and even bottling and packing innovations.
No and low varieties:The low and no movement has been gaining traction ever since 2020 and for good reason, customers are more health conscious than ever and armed with the collective knowledge of the internet they are truly ready to embrace newer healthier life choices. The low and no movement has been across every spirit category you can imagine and gin is no exception to it, with giants like Gordon’s, Beefeater and Tanqueray already trying our low and no varieties for gin we should see more companies dip into this trend, we are especially excited to see what brands like Bombay sapphire will do with this trend.
Innovative ingredients:with distilleries popping up around the globe there is bound to be innovation and experimentation with ingredients, especially citruses! Distilleries in China and India are using their own varieties of lemons and oranges among other fruits to produce fantastic innovative gin. In fact distilleries all around the world are experimenting with far more than just lemons and oranges, ingredients like kumquat, yuzu, bergamot, finger limes, etc. have also found a home in these distilleries. We are excited to see what new herbs and spices combinations distilleries experiment with to compliment these exotic and delicate fruits.
Sustainability still at top: the green trend has been going for a few years now and it is one that we believe should not stop. There is so much room for improvement in the distilling industry for improvement in distilling technology and techniques that are more energy efficient and environmentally safer. As well as using locally sourced botanicals, herbs, spices and fruits for their gins. Brands have taken major steps to ensure they can be as carbon neutral as possible but with new innovations every day, there is a lot of room to grow and help the environment as well.
Enjoy Responsibly !
