One of the more common notes found in whiskies. Covers a lot of ground from that warming hot mash you can smell at distilleries during production to fresh cut barley fields. One way to encourage the aroma to show itself is to add a little water and leave the glass for a while, come back and see if a gentle hay note has appeared.

Cooked mash
Porridge, draff, Weetabix, cooked maize, hen’s mash

Mashed potato, potato scones, sweetcorn, cooked swede

Malt extract
Malted milk, horlicks, marmite, bran, cattle cake

Husky
Chaff-like, dried hops, mousey, pot ale, iron tonic

Yeasty
Boiled pork, pork sausages, meaty, gravy, gralloch
